The UNESCO Geopark “Ore of the Alps” VISITOR CENTER
Fascinating journeys for the whole family into the world of colorful minerals
The Visitor Center is located in the area of Bischofshofen’s world-famous ski jumps. Directly adjacent to the Paul Ausserleitner Ski Jump, you will find this impressive addition to the Austria House, a building which originally accommodated the Austrian Olympic Team in Turin back in 2006. The Visitor Center was relocated and rebuilt in 2014/15 in cooperation with partner Natural History & Mammoth Museum Siegsdorf (Bavaria).
The Visitor Center serves as a central starting point for visits to the Geopark. The participating communities of Bischofshofen, Mühlbach am Hochkönig, Hüttau and St. Veit present themselves in a joint exhibition of true-to-the-original replicas of equipment and artefacts related to ore mining in prehistoric and recorded times, making the topic an extraordinary, and above all “tangible” experience. Visitors are given a diverse overview of the entire Geopark, with its many attractions that include geosites, historic mines, mine tunnels and museums.
The Austria House also offers a very nice selection of traditional regional foods whenever you are ready for a bite to eat. This will definitely be necessary, since around the Visitor Center the Geopark greets you with extraordinary nature experiences coupled with invaluable historical insights. The stairway up, and bridge across the imposing Gainfeld Waterfall (geosite), also the site of the ancient ruins of Pongowe Castle, are just a few minutes’ walk from the Visitor Center , making any visit a very special experience for the whole family.
